Different Prom Safety Campaigns
The prom is supposed to be a fun, memorable night. These organizations are creating these campaigns to make sure that memories of the prom are of the fun times associated with youth, and not by tragedy.
Here are some programs from some states and here are their campaigns:
7th Annual Safe and Sober Prom Night , Missouri – The Safe and Sober Prom Night campaign, spearheaded by Kurt Larson of Lawson Law Firm aims to keep students from being injured during prom night by raising awareness on the dangers of drug and alcohol use. They start by giving presentations to various high schools to show that students who don't participate in drug and alcohol will have a better, safe future. Students are also encouraged to take a pledge – for their parents – to stay drug and alcohol free during prom night. Students are given incentives for participating in the program, even a chance to win cash. They are also given pledge cards, wristbands, t-shirts and window stickers to display their commitment. This year, 25 high schools and over 7,500 students are participating, a truly impressive number.
Buckle Up, Slow Down! Avoid Drugs and Alcohol!, Georgia – TEAM Georgia is a safe and sober driving coalition dedicated to protecting the future by protecting today’s teens. They mainly aim to encourage safe driving techniques and reducing transportation crashes. They have programs all through the year, which is also the reason they have the Safe Prom program for prom season. (http://www.teamgeorgia.net/content/safeprom.asp) The message of Safe Prom is simple: "Buckle Up, Slow Down! Avoid Drugs and Alcohol!" They will be going around high schools distributing the TEAM Georgia/QuikTrip Teen Driving "Safe Prom" cards. The cards hold the legal facts concerning drinking and driving, and the limitations that come with a provisional license.
Dance. Don't Chance., Massachusetts – The Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) in partnership with the Registry of Motor Vehicles have a different approach. They annually hold the Dance. Don't Chance program: it's a video contest urging high school students to write, produce and submit 60-second videos on safe driving and avoiding underage drinking. To make things even more interesting, the winning school will receive a Dream Prom package courtesy of the sponsors. It’s a great way for getting the dream prom for the students, while at the same time creating awareness on the dangers of drinking and driving and safety during prom season.
